Explication avec notre vid\u00e9o&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Pour produire de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de l\u2019\u00e9nergie nucl\u00e9aire, il faut <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine\">&nbsp;<\/small>br\u00fbler<small class=\"fine\">&nbsp;<\/small>\u00bb<\/i> de l\u2019uranium \u2014 en fait le soumettre \u00e0 la fission nucl\u00e9aire, qui g\u00e9n\u00e8re de la chaleur. Mais tout le processus conduisant \u00e0 cette \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 produit des d\u00e9chets radioactifs tr\u00e8s dangereux pour la sant\u00e9 et dont la dur\u00e9e de nocivit\u00e9 se compte en milliers d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Probl\u00e8me suppl\u00e9mentaire&nbsp;: il n\u2019y a pas un seul type de d\u00e9chets radioactifs, mais plusieurs cat\u00e9gories, cr\u00e9\u00e9es \u00e0 chaque \u00e9tape de la cha\u00eene de transformation de l\u2019uranium. C\u2019est ce que vous explique la vid\u00e9o r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par <i>Reporterre<\/i>&nbsp;:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"spip\"><span class=\"caps\">VOIR<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">LA<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">VID<\/span>\u00c9O<\/h3>\n<div><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MiohvdwITqk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u2022 Tout d\u00e9bute dans les <strong>mines d\u2019uranium<\/strong>. En France, plus de 180 sites miniers ont \u00e9t\u00e9 exploit\u00e9s entre la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et 2001. Cette extraction a g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 elle seule <strong>300 millions de tonnes de d\u00e9chets radioactifs<\/strong>, qui restent entrepos\u00e9s pr\u00e8s des anciennes mines. Aujourd\u2019hui nous n\u2019exploitons plus les mines fran\u00e7aises, mais importons le minerai d\u2019uranium du Kazakhstan, du Niger, du Canada, de l\u2019Australie et de l\u2019Ouzb\u00e9kistan. O\u00f9 les d\u00e9chets produits par cette exploitation restent sur place.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Afin d\u2019\u00eatre transport\u00e9 plus facilement, l\u2019uranium est transform\u00e9 en une poudre jaune vif appel\u00e9e <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine\">&nbsp;<\/small>Yellow Cake<small class=\"fine\">&nbsp;<\/small>\u00bb<\/i>. Ces op\u00e9rations d\u2019extraction et de concentration de l\u2019uranium contaminent les eaux pr\u00e8s des sites miniers, par exemple au Niger, o\u00f9 certains puits pr\u00e9sentent une contamination en uranium 10 fois sup\u00e9rieure aux normes de l\u2019Organisation mondiale de la sant\u00e9. La p\u00e9riode de l\u2019uranium 238 \u00e9tant de 4,5 milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es, la radioactivit\u00e9 des <strong>roches et d\u00e9chets uranif\u00e8res<\/strong> ne d\u00e9cro\u00eet quasiment pas \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle humaine.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2022<strong> Le <i>Yellow cake<\/i> voyage ensuite jusque dans le d\u00e9partement de l\u2019Aude o\u00f9 les 53.000 habitants de Narbonne vivent \u00e0 moins d\u2019un kilom\u00e8tre de l\u2019usine Orano Malvesi. Celle-ci s\u2019\u00e9tend sur une superficie \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 18 terrains de rugby. L\u00e0, le <i>Yellow cake<\/i> est purifi\u00e9 et converti en t\u00e9trafluorure d\u2019uranium. Il r\u00e9sulte de cette op\u00e9ration des effluents nitrat\u00e9s contenant de l\u2019uranium qui s\u2019accumulent dans des bassins \u00e0 ciel ouvert. Fin 2010, pr\u00e8s d\u2019un million de m<sup class=\"typo_exposants\">3<\/sup> de ces effluents radioactifs et polluants \u00e9taient ainsi stock\u00e9s pr\u00e8s de l\u2019usine.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Direction le site nucl\u00e9aire du Tricastin, dans la Dr\u00f4me. Le t\u00e9trafluorure d\u2019uranium y est converti en hexafluorure d\u2019uranium \u00e0 l\u2019usine Cormurex <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span>. C\u2019est sous cette forme que l\u2019uranium, dit naturel, est ensuite enrichi dans l\u2019usine Georges Besse <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span> au milieu d\u2019une for\u00eat de tubes verticaux. On le place dans un grand cylindre qui tourne tr\u00e8s vite. Au final, on obtient, \u00e0 partir de 7.000 tonnes d\u2019uranium naturel, 1.000 tonnes d\u2019uranium enrichi. Ce qui g\u00e9n\u00e8re 6.000 tonnes d\u2019<strong>uranium appauvri<\/strong>. Fin 2013, le stock d\u2019uranium appauvri radioactif s\u2019\u00e9levait \u00e0 290.000 tonnes, entrepos\u00e9es sous forme de poudre dans des conteneurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Prochain arr\u00eat&nbsp;: le site de Romans (Dr\u00f4me). Ici, on va compacter l\u2019uranium enrichi sous forme de pastilles, que l\u2019on assemble dans des tubes appel\u00e9s crayons. C\u2019est la derni\u00e8re \u00e9tape qui permet d\u2019obtenir les \u00e9l\u00e9ments combustibles destin\u00e9s aux r\u00e9acteurs nucl\u00e9aires.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments combustibles, ou assemblages, sont exp\u00e9di\u00e9s dans les diff\u00e9rents r\u00e9acteurs, o\u00f9 ils vont subir la fission nucl\u00e9aire pendant trois ans. Une fois qu\u2019ils sont us\u00e9s, les assemblages de combustibles sortis de la cuve du r\u00e9acteur sont trop chauds pour \u00eatre transport\u00e9s imm\u00e9diatement. Ils sont donc plac\u00e9s dans des piscines de d\u00e9sactivation pendant un ou deux ans. Ces <strong>combustibles nucl\u00e9aires us\u00e9s<\/strong> sont les d\u00e9chets de la r\u00e9action nucl\u00e9aire. Dans les autres pays utilisant l\u2019\u00e9nergie atomique, ces d\u00e9chets restent dans cet \u00e9tat. Mais la France a mis en place un autre syst\u00e8me, qui complique encore le probl\u00e8me. Car apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 refroidis en piscine, les combustibles us\u00e9s sont transport\u00e9s au centre Orano de retraitement de La Hague (Manche).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u00c0 La Hague, ces combustibles sont <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine\">&nbsp;<\/small>retrait\u00e9s<small class=\"fine\">&nbsp;<\/small>\u00bb,<\/i> c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire que leurs diff\u00e9rents composants sont s\u00e9par\u00e9s. Principale mati\u00e8re radioactive r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9e, <strong>l\u2019uranium issu du retraitement<\/strong>. Il n\u2019est pas utilis\u00e9 et reste entrepos\u00e9 dans des f\u00fbts sur le site du Tricastin.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 L\u2019autre mati\u00e8re issue du retraitement est le <strong>plutonium<\/strong>. Une mati\u00e8re radioactive ultra dangereuse \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9e pour fabriquer des armes nucl\u00e9aires \u2013 la bombe Fat Man, largu\u00e9e par les Am\u00e9ricains sur la ville japonaise de Nagasaki en 1945, en \u00e9tait remplie.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Une partie du plutonium est envoy\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019usine Orano Melox o\u00f9 il est m\u00e9lang\u00e9 \u00e0 de l\u2019uranium appauvri pour fabriquer un autre type de combustible nucl\u00e9aire&nbsp;: le <strong>Mox<\/strong>(Mixed oxide). Probl\u00e8me&nbsp;: une fois utilis\u00e9, le Mox, lui aussi tr\u00e8s radioactif, reste chaud beaucoup plus longtemps que le combustible d\u2019uranium us\u00e9. Il doit donc refroidir pendant plusieurs dizaines d\u2019ann\u00e9es dans des piscines. Actuellement il est entrepos\u00e9 dans les bassins de la Hague. Et comme on ne le retraite pas, il constitue un autre d\u00e9chet nucl\u00e9aire.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Enfin, le retraitement produit deux types de d\u00e9chets radioactifs&nbsp;: les <strong>actinides mineurs<\/strong> ultra radioactifs et des <strong>produits de fission<\/strong>.
